Very few games, if any, manage to strike the perfect balance between strategy and action like Lords II does, and it’s even rarer for a computer AI in a system game to be truly capable. The Command and Conquer series from Westwood and the World of Warcraft series from Blizzard all offer stiff competition, but Lords of the Realm II manages to obfuscate them both and so earns my vote as the best strategy game of the year. The whole version of this game is fantastic. Everything from the game’s interactivity to its visuals to its attack and fight mechanics to its audio has been upgraded. This is not the case with Sierra’s updated version of Lords of the Realm, which won the Middle Ages Methodology Grant in 1994. Most games in the genre of “methodology” will focus on either micromanagement or monster fights, and regardless of the focus, the other often remains.
